چکیده

Intranight polarization variability in AGN has not been studied extensively so far. Studying the variability in polarization makes it possibly to distinguish between different emission mechanisms. Thus it can help answering the question if intranight variability in radio-loud and radio-quiet AGN is of the same or of fundamentally different origin. In this paper we investigate intranight polarization variability in AGN. Our sample consists of 28 AGN at low to moderate redshifts ( 0.048 6 z 6 1.036), 12 of which are radio-quiet quasars (RQQs) and 16 are radio-loud blazars. The subsample of blazars consists of eight flat-spectrum radio-quasars (FSRQs) and eight BL Lac objects. Each AGN was observed for a time span of ∼ 4 h in the R band to measure polarization and variability. Using statistical methods, we determine duty cycles for polarized emission and polarization intranight variability. We find clear differences between the two samples. A majority of the radio-loud AGN show moderate to high degrees of polarization, more than half of them also show variability in polarization. There seems to be a dividing line for polarization intranight variability at P ∼ 5 per cent over which all objects vary in polarization. We did not find clear correlations between the strength of the variability and the redshift or degree of polarization. Only two out of 12 radio-quiet quasars show polarized emission, both at levels of P < 1 per cent. The lack of polarization intranight variability in radio-quiet AGN points towards accretion instabilities being the cause for intranight flux variability whereas the high duty cycle of polarization variability in radio-loud objects is more likely caused by instabilities in the jet or changes of physical conditions in the jet plasma. We were able to constrain the timescale of the detected variations to > 4 h. Further studies of intranight polarization variability will be necessary to reveal exact physical conditions behind this phenomenon.

We present new clues to the problem of the radio loudness dichotomy arising from an extensive search for intranight optical variability in seven sets of optically luminous radio-quiet quasars and (radio-loud) BL Lacertae objects, which are matched in optical luminosity and redshift. Our monitoring of radio-quiet quasars has for the first time clearly detected such intranight variability, with p...

Radio-Variability in Radio-Quiet Quasars and Low-Luminosity AGN

We report on two surveys of radio-weak AGN to look for radio variability. We find significant variability with an RMS of 10-20% on a timescale of months in radio-quiet and radio-intermediate quasars. This exceeds the variability of radio cores in radio-loud quasars (excluding blazars), which vary only on a few percent level. The variability in radio-quiet quasars confirms that the radio emissio...

Intranight optical variability of radio-quiet and radio lobe dominated quasars

We present results of a programme of multi-epoch, intra-night optical monitoring of a sample of non-blazar type AGN, which includes seven radio-quiet QSOs (RQQs) and an equal number of radio-loud, lobe-dominated quasars (LDQs), covering a redshift range from about 0.2 to 2.0. These two sets of optically bright and intrinsically luminous QSOs are well matched in the redshift–optical luminosity (...

Herschel-ATLAS:The connection between star formation and AGN activity in radio-loud and radio-quiet active galaxies

We examine the relationship between star formation and AGN activity by constructing matched samples of local (0 < z < 0.6) radio-loud and radio-quiet AGN in the HerschelATLAS fields. Radio-loud AGN are classified as high-excitation and low-excitation radio galaxies (HERGs, LERGs) using their emission lines and WISE 22-μm luminosity. AGN accretion and jet powers in these active galaxies are trac...

Optical Polarization of 52 Radio-Loud QSOs and BL Lac Objects

Polarization measurements are presented for 52 radio-loud QSOs and BL Lac objects. For 9 highly polarized (p> 3%) AGN, these are the first published polarization measurements. Of these 9, 7 are highly-polarized QSOs (HPQs), one is a BL Lac object and another is a likely BL Lac object. Polarization variability is confirmed for some of these new and previously known highly-polarized AGN. While 6 ...
